NEONATAL SEPSIS

Neonatal sepsis is a life-threatening bloodstream infection in infants under 28 days old. Because newborns have immature immune systems, they cannot fight infections well.

Causative Pathogens

Group B Streptococcus (GBS): The leading global cause of early-onset sepsis in term infants.

Escherichia coli (E. coli): Predominates in preterm and very low birth weight (VLBW) infants.

Other Pathogens: Listeria monocytogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus.
